Olivia Lynch is a freelance yoga teacher in London. From a privileged background, she is married to Steve, a working class trader in the city.

Having lost both her parents, she is an independently wealthy woman, whose only family is her hated brother Jonathan. Until her marriage to Steve, Jonathan played a dominant role in her life. Compassionate, Olivia’s warm nature dovetails perfectly with Steve’s success and standing in the city. Despite their different backgrounds, she and Steve are very much the successful, loving couple. But on one bank holiday, in London’s hottest summer since records began, two events threaten to shatter their world. Olivia’s discovery that she is pregnant, whilst celebrated by her and Steve, re-awakens hidden, dark emotions that she thought had been buried for good. At the same time, Steve, having borrowed money from an unproven financial source, has until 5pm that day to secure a million pounds to save his start-up business. As the day unfolds, Olivia visits her psychotherapist, desperate to rid herself of her emotional burden once and for all. On the other side of London, Steve, in a desperate bid to raise the money, accepts a humiliating bet to run across London for the sport of his former employer.
